Madeleine L’Engle (1918–2007) was an American author, essayist, and poet who wrote about Christianity, science, and art. Born in New York City, L’Engle began writing stories at the age of five, and attended a number of boarding schools in her youth. Her first novel was published within a year of her graduation from Smith College, and despite many of her subsequent writings being met with rejection, she continued to write, eventually publishing more than a dozen books for adults and children. Her best-known novel, A Wrinkle in Time, won the Newbery Medal.
