Christian Discipleship
People today do not need long sermons or religious words, they need to be shown deeds and a practical way of discipleship. Our time needs the tangible demonstration that God is stronger than all hate, all need, all sin, and all disunity. God needs a people who devote their lives completely, without reservation, to his cause. They should be people who do not consider their own salvation first but who intercede in prayer for the needs of men and hope and believe in the victory of God.

God's Revolution: Justice, Community, and the Coming Kingdom
Be warned: Arnold doesn't approach Christian discipleship as a benign route to religious fulfillment, but as revolution - a transformation that begins within, with the purging of self, and spreads outward to encompass every aspect of life. Here is the raw reality of the gospel that has the power to change the world.
Provocations: The Spiritual Writings of Søren Kierkegaard
Divided into six sections, Provocations contains a little of everything from Kierkegaard's prodigious output, including his wryly humorous attacks on what he calls the "mediocre shell" of conventional Christianity, his brilliantly pithy parables, his amazing insights on the human condition, and his incisive attempts to dig through the fluff of theological jargon and clear a way for the basics: decisiveness, obedience, passion, and recognition of the truth.
"And Christ’s life indeed makes it manifest, terrifyingly manifest, what dreadful untruth it is to admire the truth instead of following it. When there is no danger, when there is a dead calm, when everything is favorable to our Christianity, it is all too easy to confuse an admirer with a follower. And this can happen very quietly. The admirer can be in the delusion that the position he takes is the true one, when all he is doing is playing it safe. Give heed, therefore, to the call of discipleship!" - Søren Kierkegaard
A Third Testament: A modern writer explores the spiritual wanderings of Augustine, Blake, Pascal, Tolstoy, Bonhoeffer, Kierkegaard, and Dostoevsky
A tart-tongued agnostic for most of his life, Muggeridge converted to Catholicism at 80. But he never stopped asking questions about Christian discipleship, which surely explains his enduring appeal.
"Between the fantasies of the ego and the truth of love, between the darkness of the will and the light of the imagination, there will always be the need for a bridge and a prophetic voice calling on us to cross it. This is what my seven seekers after God were destined to provide, each in his own way and in relation to his own time. So I came to see them as God’s spies, posted in actual or potential enemy-occupied territory, the enemy being, of course, in this particular case, the Devil."
Eberhard Arnold: Writings Selected
If you've never read any of Eberhard Arnold's writings before, this collection is a good choice. For those already familiar with the author, Writings might be described as the Portable Arnold - a collection of the strongest and best of his prolific output. His insights into the human condition are as relevant today as they were in the early twenties, and his call to Christian discipleship rings as true now as it did then.
Articles on Christian Discipleship
Building on the Rock
Convinced that the Sermon on the Mount is the most important blueprint for life, I've been discussing it with some other young people, and we are determined to build on the rock of faith by finding practical ways to live out these teachings, here and now.
The Great Floodtide of the Spirit
There will be an immeasurably great change everywhere as soon as God sends forth his Spirit upon the earth. The question is: Will he?
Repentance and Christian Discipleship
However strong our will to control ourselves, and however deceptive we are, God sees through everything into the depth of our hearts. Only the act of putting ourselves under his light gives us a chance for renewal. Everything is possible if we put ourselves willingly under the light of God. But if we refuse to do this, everything in our life is in danger.
Always With You
The story of one man's evening spent taking soup to the homeless on the streets of New York City, and his thoughts on the nature of discipleship.
"Yes, the poor will always be with us. But surely Christ didn’t point this out in order to nurture our complacency or let us off the hook. I think he said it to remind his disciples that even if he himself would soon be leaving them, the poor would not. On the contrary, they would always be there, waiting for his followers to take care of them. He had to mean this, for he commanded us to love and serve him. And he said that everything we do for “the least of these,” we also do for him."
