Scientists like me are drawn to intricate systems and, despite common perceptions from nonscientists, seeking to understand our world need not be a domineering or disenchanting pursuit. The act of witnessing, examining, and attempting to comprehend the vast complexity of the natural world often leads scientists to experiences of awe and wonder, congruent with religious experiences or what others feel in the presence of great art. 

On an icebreaker off the coast of Antarctica, I felt a warming planet’s pulse.
